Gonubie Primary – Sport

Gonubie Primary School has a rich sporting history. We pride ourselves in our determination and embrace the ‘never give up’ philosophy which has served us very well over the years. A number of our past pupils have gone on to represent their province and even their country at senior at both junior and senior level. Past pupils include Keegan Daniel, Khwezi Mona and Sinethemba Qeshile.

We strive to offer our pupils a varied and diverse program catering to all ages and genders and we are constantly looking at adding new extra-murals to our program.

In addition to these codes offered by the school we also offer other, paid for, opportunities and these include karate, martial arts and dancing.

Our cricket program starts at mini-cricket level and then progresses to hard ball from U/9 – U/13. These teams take part in weekly matches as well as a number of weekend fixtures throughout the season. Our campus consists of two concrete pitches as well as four concrete nets. As well as regular practices we also offer a selected session to players from U/10 – U/13 level.

Pupils have the opportunity to take part in athletics in the summer months. The program consists of both, track and field events, with learners taking part in an annual quadrangular event where they compete against Lilyfontein, Komga and Stutterheim.

Tennis is offered at beginner, intermediate and senior level and caters to both boys and girls who compete in singles, doubles as well as mixed doubles matches in the league.

This takes place at the Gonubie Sports club courts and caters to beginner, intermediate and team players. Squash is offered to, both, boys and girls.

Rugby is introduced from Grade R and our U/7 and U/8 players take part in a number of festivals throughout the year. We have U/9, U/11 and U/13 teams that play in the league. The school regularly attends tournaments and festivals locally and beyond. Our coaches are passionate and driven and constantly try to get the best out of the players that they coach.

Hockey is played in the winter months across all age groups. Our junior teams participate in festivals while our senior teams play matches in the league, go on tours and play a number of derby days each year. Boys hockey is offered on a social level.

Our girls have the opportunity to take part in netball, across all age groups, in the winter months. They Are kept very busy and have the opportunity to participate in regular league fixtures, compete in local Saturday derbies, attend festivals and go on various tours throughout the season.

The school has a six lane 25m pool and offers swimming at all ability groups from beginners to selected. Children have the opportunity of taking part in various A, B and C league galas.

Chess is a popular activity at Gonubie Primary and we are very fortunate to have an outdoor chess board. Our pupils compete against each other for position on the school chess ladder and also compete in matches against other schools.

We are very fortunate to have very committed drummies coaches who spend hours and hours getting our girls ready to compete in various competitions. We compete locally and in other provinces. A number of our drum majorettes have gone on to receive higher honors in the code.
